Weekend in NYC: Christmas Sing-Along, Unsilent Night, Gingerbread Ships + Espoleta

SHARE

Before holiday music wears out its welcome, embrace the sounds of the season with a Christmas sing-along. SecretFormula does the hosting as Union Hall in Park Slope rings out Friday, December 12, with pop versions of all your favorite yuletide tuneage. Knock back some egg nog as you belt out “The Little Drummer Boy” and “8 Days of Christmas” in tandem with the pop stars on the video screens. Lyrics will scroll, so even if you’ve put away a few too many Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer cocktails, your rendition won’t be muddled. Enjoy the camaraderie of the upbeat sing-along crowd, further fueled by free milk and cookies, an ugly sweater contest, and an appearance by Santa himself. And even when the evening ends, the sing-alongs will continue, as rogue caroling goes on into the wee hours at nearby bars. The figgy pudding can’t be too far away.

Legion of Boom Boxes

Let your vocal chords recover on Saturday, December 13, as a chorus of vintage boom boxes provides the soundtrack for the 22nd annual Unsilent Night. Composer Phil Kline distributes cassettes and CDs at the arch at Washington Square Park and then leads a procession of almost-synched sound to Tompkins Square Park. On this night, even the tone deaf can make some beautiful music.

Naval Gazing

Let your little shipbuilders pitch in on an edible masterpiece, as Lambs Club manager Christopher Sanchez serves as foreman for the Third Annual Gingerbread Ship Workshop at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Saturday, December 13, kids move from crafting candy cane railings to an interactive tour at the BLDG 92 musuem and some arts and crafts enrichment. Adults get free admission and little ones get to leave with a souvenir gingerbread ship cookie and the supplies to decorate it. (Note that cookie maiden voyages may be extremely short-lived.)

Now Open

Top Chef Master Sue Torres follows up on her Sueños success with a new partnership at Espoleta in the East Village. As consulting chef, Torres will oversee Mexican-inspired Spanish tapas, featuring creative twists like panko, salty cheese, and smoked paprika joining together in parsnip croquettes. There’s a smart wine program, although you’ll probably be heading straight for the sangrias.
