Mass culture isn’t meant to be experienced alone. To really enjoy a big game — or a TV show with a cult following — bring your crew to Professor Thom’s in the East Village. Make a reservation first so you can be sure you’ll claim a cozy booth for your group. The friendly, upbeat crowd will get you in the flow of things right off. Although the space fills up, the staff are pros and will hook you up quick with a beer from a 50-strong selection. Settle in and order the famous house nachos, which come in crowd-pleasing triple sizes, served on a pizza stand.
As you check out the memorabilia on the walls, it’ll be clear you’re in a Michigan and Boston haven. Don’t let the local allegiances dissuade you, even if you’re a die-hard Yankees or Jets fan: it’s fun to infiltrate enemy territory, and even more fun when the local heroes end up on top. Professor Thom’s does a great job of getting into the spirit of a major event, like a Goal Wheel trotted out for the World Cup, spinning at every score to award beers, shots, or spiked Jell-O free for the entire house. There are 22 TVs, so your entourage won’t miss a play. If you’re looking for a get-together without sports, Thom’s does themed-out TV parties just as well, like Game of Thrones nights, complete with the odd sighting of author George R.R. Martin. Come on a Wednesday and you and your friends can show off the nether sides of your knowledge with weekly trivia nights.
