Hogar Dulce Hogar is Spanish for “home sweet home” and the next time you’re up for a homey taste of Europe, head to this charming Basque café in Soho. Your kids have been so well-behaved lately, they’ve earned a family outing for a special treat. Little eyes will light right up when they catch sight of the display cases in front, stacked with temptations which may be unfamiliar—unless you took your last family vacation in San Sebastián. Try a classic almond cake, or a layered San Marcos pastry (topped with a crunchy roof of golden custard), or torrijas, a Spanish take on French bread, with homemade brioche topped by cinnamon and lemon and then bronzed to perfection. Of course, once your offspring get a glimpse of gelato, it may be hard to change the subject. It’s all homemade, with lemon, bright green apple, and rich hazlenut flavorings. If mom and dad want to relax over a cup of coffee, or even a special “bombon” (layers of espresso, whipped cream, and condensed milk), the kids will find ways to keep themselves entertained. There’s a living wall of plants and flowers growing up a double-height ceiling for them to check out. Or they can head to the back, where a kid-sized nook is covered in chalkboard, ready as an outlet for their creativity. There’s books and toys, too, should parents want to linger over a bowl of Ibérico ham and eggs, or a slider nestled into a house-made bun.
