Living in a destination city definitely has its privileges. While the rest of the country is worrying about snow, you can be taking in a round of golf under sunny skies without a second thought. Take the Trump National Doral, for example: With its crystalline pools, expansive golf courses, and fantastic dining, why go anywhere else? Call your sweetheart, tell them to pack their bags, and head a few miles up the road. Settling in for a “staycation” at Trump Doral sounds like the perfect way to spend a few Miami winter days.
Swaying palm trees and sunshine welcome you to the serene retreat amid otherwise-bustling Miami. With long stretches of grass, rolling golf courses, and rows of cabanas by the pool, it’s easy to forget you work and live in the same city. The lobby is suitably opulent, with huge chandeliers, burgundy leather couches, and gold-framed mirrors, but you don’t linger long; you have some golfing to do.
Book a tee time and start your round right by the glittering lake…with a par-five first hole. After its multimillion-dollar renovation, the fairway at Trump Doral has hosted celebrities and professionals, and it will soon be hosting the 2015 World Golf Championships. So, yes, the Blue Monster Course will do nicely for a morning activity. Feel the breeze in your hair as you drive through, from hole to hole, making your way around the verdant oasis.
However you make out on the links (funny, you seem to have lost the scoresheet) the course wouldn’t be complete without a pit stop at the “19th hole.” Take a break and grab a seat on the outdoor patio at the Champions Bar and Grill, with the sprawling green laid out before you. Swinging and putting is hungry work, so go straight for a big boy sandwich of sirloin, pulled pork marinated in mojo (a citrusy blend of lime and orange juices), topped with aged Gruyere and mushrooms. Or, keep it light: The local ceviche sings with a tangy-sweet mix of passion fruit, cilantro, red onion, Peruvian cancha corn, and yellow pepper for a nice bit of heat. Whether you go for fish or meat, a hoppy Lagunitas IPA caps everything off delightfully.
After a hard day on the fairway, head to the spa for a bit of indulgence. To truly relax, pick side-by-side hot stone massage to soothe those tired muscles with rhythmic application of hot and cool stones. Or treat yourself to one of the 18 cabanas by the pool – with butler service – and lounge in front of a private, 55-inch HDTV flat screen TV. You may still be in your hometown, but it certainly doesn’t have to feel like it.
