Not all summer movies need to involve copious amounts of popcorn, testosterone and superheroes–not that there’s anything wrong with that. But on a midsummer night’s outing, it’s also pretty swell to take your date or your cinephile crew to a place that’s the antithesis of your neighborhood multiplex. Enter Think Hotel Group’s cultured Courtyard Art and Cinema Series, launched in celebration of Miami Film Month. Guide your sweetheart to the courtyard of the South Beach Hotel this Friday and immerse yourselves in screenings of an array of artsy movies–er films–amidst a resplendent backdrop of Miami’s finest scenery, greenery, and local artists. Previous screenings have included Cutie and the Boxer and Searching for Sugarman, while upcoming films include The Woodmans (June 27), a 2011 documentary about the life, work and family of photographer Francesca Woodman.
Before, during, or after the screenings, check out the local art, all of which is for admiration and for purchase if you so desire. As for the movie snacks, give the popcorn and soda a miss and instead stuff your faces with fine food and cocktails by the hotel’s Orange Blossom resto/lounge, for sale in the lobby. They’ve got delightfully postmodern Old Florida fare (yes there is such a thing), including a fine fig prosciutto flatbread and a kicky Orange Blossom julep with Smith & Cross Pot Still rum, Remy Martin VSOP cognac, Orange blossom honey, and mint. There’s also salmon tartare, margherita flatbread, a respectable burger, and hummus with toasted naan. This is not your mama’s Thin Mints, that’s for sure.
