Cirque du Soleil Amaluna: Date Night at the Circus

Date night at the circus? Absolutely, as long as it’s Cirque du Soleil. The touring theater company first started by two Montreal street performers in 1984 now has some the biggest shows around, with productions taking place all over the world. This month Miami is hosting the latest show, Amaluna, and it’s the hottest ticket in town, so surprise your sweetheart with a night of romance and fun at this electrifying spectacle of sight and sound.

Every Cirque du Soilel performance is full of gravity-defying acrobatics and unbelievable special effects – the kind of thrills that might make you clutch reflexively at your date’s arm – but the mystery and romance of the storyline add a special touch to this one, which is playing through January 25. Amaluna is the story of a princess’s coming-of-age, set on an island ruled by goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. When Queen Prospera’s storm lands a group of young men on her island, you’ll be enraptured by the love story that unfolds between Princess Miranda and her brave young suitor, Romeo.

From your seats under the Grand Chapiteau, an expansive, blue-and-yellow striped tent sprawling out on the grounds of Sun Life Stadium, you’ll hear the chorus of a powerful, all-female orchestra, and marvel at the unconventional set design. You almost certainly haven’t seen anything like this: An installation known as “The Waterbowl” sits center-stage, sparkling like a gem with prismatic colors reflecting off the glass. This is where the princess and her Romeo first meet and share a kiss while submerged in its waters, to the delight of the audience.

Intricate costumes demand just as much attention as the sophisticated set and choreography, helping to portray the ethereal nature of the mystical characters. A company of dancers dressed in bejeweled silver and black leotards assembles to form a goddess with 1,000 arms – a truly indelible image. Then, look up in awe as the fairy-like valkyries in golden headdresses and blue costumes fly out over the audience to help liberate Romeo in an exhilarating display of fearless gymnastics. Descending from straps on an overhanging carousel, they gracefully twirl at high speeds in defense of the hero.

If dinner and a show have lost their edge, Amaluna is here to sharpen them back up. Don your finest attire to mirror the exotic costumes and prepare for an otherworldly escape with your special someone.
