Stranded at the drive-in, branded a fool … but the thing is, when you take your date to the Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In, you’ll be branded anything but that, and you may even get a second date out of it, no matter what’s playing. Despite the retro-ness of it all, this is not Olivia Newton John and John Travolta’s drive-in, though you may indeed be able to catch a showing of Grease straight from your own hot rod. The Austin-based drive-in chainlet has parked itself behind the now-defunct Coconut Grove Playhouse, conveniently located next to the Grove’s iconic Taurus Beer and Whisk(e)y House, which will provide you with much more than popcorn and soda pop, though they have that too if you want it, along with s’mores for two, complete with mini fire on which to scorch your marshmallows and hopefully not your vinyl or leather, a “vintage retro gummy flight,” and more substantial fare including drive-in dogs, a fried chicken strip basket, and even truffle popcorn.
With just 30 spots, you’ll need to make a reservation unless your date doesn’t mind sitting in the pedestrian seating area while everyone else is reclining comfortably in their cars or in the back of their trucks — which also is allowed and encouraged. You can even bring your dog if you want as long as the dog doesn’t make more noise than the movie or your engines. As for what’s playing — don’t expect the latest summer blockbuster but rather, on Drive-Indie Mondays, you may see Richard Linklater’s classic Dazed and Confused, or on Family Night Tuesdays you may catch Back to the Future or something similar. But back to being stranded at the drive-in: on Aug. 26, they’re showing Grease Sing-a Long-a. Show that you know all the words to “Beauty School Dropout” and sing like an angel, or be ready to thumb a ride home.
