Wynwood Art Walk: The Best Way to Enjoy Miami’s Art Scene

SHARE

Every second Saturday of every month the Wynwood district hosts Wynwood Art Walk, which is undeniably the best way to enjoy the works of local and international contemporary artists. During Art Walk, many galleries offering complimentary beverages and live music for an artistic sampling like no other. Take this excellent opportunity to peruse original works of art at your leisure in search of the perfect statement piece for your home.

Wynwood has been called one of America’s hippest neighborhoods, and in recent years it has become an artistic hub of whimsical street art and vibrant wall murals competing for your attention. Standout works include the wall of droopy red eyes on NW 27th Street and the giant cartoon-style boombox facing I-95.

Galleries Galore

Wynwood is all about gallery-hopping. The most popular galleries are situated along NW 2nd Ave, between NW 23rd and NW 26th Streets. Crowd favorites include The Hangar Gallery, Now Contemporary, and Brisky. New artists are always being featured, so it’s likely that what you see on display one month won’t be there the next. This is especially true during Art Basel season (first week of December) when high-profile collections of splatter paintings, bizarre sculptures, and quirky installations are being showcased. If you’ve never been an art aficionado, no worries—Wynwood Art Walk is all about making art accessible to all. So wear comfy shoes and prepare to get cultured.

Wynwood Walls

Perhaps the most iconic feature of Wynwood is Wynwood Walls—an open-air, 80,000-square-foot warehouse complex completely decorated with vibrant murals by artists from around the world. Upon entering through the iron gates you’ll be greeted by unique portraits, old-school graffiti, abstract forms, and geometrical patterns.

Food and Drink

If you’ve managed to resist the temptation of the gourmet food trucks, there are several fantastic restaurants in the area you can try. For gourmet pizza and pasta, reserve a table at Joey’s. This was the first restaurant to open in Wynwood, and it continues to shine as one of Miami’s top foodie destinations and popular celebrity hangout. Outstanding menu items include the Dolce E Piccante pizza (figs, Gorgonzola cheese, honey, and hot peppers) and the Linguine Indiavolate (black tiger shrimp and spicy tomato sauce).

Want something more low-key? For delectable burgers, beer, and unique bites like crispy alligator fritters and Bahamian conch salad, Kush is a great choice. You won’t find any frills here, just simple wooden tables and exposed brick walls to set the casual mood. And for those who just want a cold one, don’t miss the Wynwood Brewing Company—Miami’s first craft beer producer. You can tour the brewery, then sample their famous citrus-flavored Wynwood IPA straight from the source. Wynwood Brewing Company features a rotating pop-up art gallery with local artists during Wynwood Art Walk.

Whether you like your art weird, classic, or bordering on the extreme, there will always be something to feast your eyes (and stomach) on during Wynwood Art Walk.
