This weekend, if you’re not atoning for your sins, consider raising a stein at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus’s 20th (!) annual Coral Gables Oktoberfest, taking place now through October 12, featuring all sorts of festive-beer-soaked activities including performances by Austrian bands including Gruppe GASTEIN, Die Ennstaler BErzigeuner and Jimmy & Erhard. Take that, One Direction. For the competitive and/or gluttonous types, there will also be a beer stein holding contest, yodeling contest, and our personal fave, the bratwurst-eating contest, which may ultimately result in a fast that has nothing to do with religion.
Also on the pagan end of things is Halloween, which is approaching as fast as your buddy claims to be able to inhale seven hundred bratwurst. Blink and Christmas candy will replace the candy corn, so start the festivities early at the Coconut Grove Pumpkin Patch Festival, October 4-5 at Peacock Park, 2820 McFarlane Road. There, you and the fam can partake in all sorts of pumpkinry, including picking them from a mass of over 2,000. There are also kid-friendly activities such as a hay maze, scarecrow-making sessions, and all sorts of shows.
And finally, although he exited stage left from JLo’s life long ago, Marc Anthony has a collection of greatest hits that don’t involve the word booty, singing many of them as well as some new songs off his latest album, the numerically cryptic chart topping 3.0, at a two night gig at the American Airlines Arena Friday and Saturday. “With 3.0,” his website says, “he comes even closer to our hearts.” See? Nothing about the word booty.
