Not everyone wears ugly sweaters this time of year. Just ask those people who dress up like their favorite video game or anime characters year-round in the kooky movement known as cosplay. If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, neither are we, so consider heading to the Cosplay Kingdom at the Covenant Music House of Rock—a gathering gamers, geeks and those who just like dressing up like Donkey Kong from time to time–at 8pm Friday, December 12. In addition to the costumes, there will be eight bands and DJs playing the latest in video game theme songs—just kidding, we think, though one of the bands is named Joysticks & Quarter Slots, so cue the Q*bert music. Tickets are just $10. For more information, call (305) 303-3976 or email email@example.com.
Pause for Peace
For a real retro night out, however, the Wolfsonian-FIU is taking a time machine back to 1914, specifically during the WWI Christmas Truce, when British and German soliders along the Western Front temporarily put down their rifles for spontaneous holiday celebrations and caroling. Victuals, Libations, and Song, as the centennial party is being billed, takes place from 6pm to 9pm Friday and will feature international cheese, beer, and music by the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, who may or may not be taking requests. Taking the whole goodwill concept to another level, this event is free and open to the public.
Combat boots are not required at the Wolfsonian fete, though you may want to sport them Saturday, December 13 at 4pm to the first-ever Wynwood Fashion Collective, a day of catwalking, sashaying, and shopping in Miami’s hippest ‘hood. The fashion show goes nonstop at The Hangar, 2235 NW 2nd Ave., where local designers including Del Mar, Chris and Mars, Open Lotus, and Well Tied will show off their wares–all for purchase, of course, via iPads attached to sales staff who will also be sashaying around in case the urge to splurge hits you. The show lasts until 11pm so the indecisive have plenty of time to hem, haw, and haute it up. For tickets and more information on this funky frockerie, go to the WFC website.
Sprint With Serena
If that wasn’t enough of a workout, set your alarm clocks for the crack of dawn Sunday, December 14 to prepare for Serena Williams’ Ultimate Run South Beach, a quarter marathon and 5K that she will win no matter what, but will give you a chance to brag that you ran with her and that you contributed not only to shin splints but to the Serena Williams Foundation, which offers assistance to families affected by violent crimes and provides underprivileged kids with better educational opportunities. The sprinting goes along Ocean Drive and throughout South Beach, where all healthy runs end with a party that may or may not be serving spiked Gatorade. The run starts at 8am at the 1100 block of Ocean Drive. Quarter marathon is $55, the 5K is $40 and the kids’ dash is $20. For more information call (305) 538-8899.
