Do you dream of going to Oktoberfest, but just can’t swing a trip to Munich right now? Instead of crying into your beer at home, grab your friends and go to Octoberfest Miami at Marlins Park this Saturday, October 4 starting at 3pm. You’ll get your fill of German brews and all the other trappings of the Bavarian bash — with a fun Miami twist.
The Magic City’s version of Octoberfest has all the classic earmarks of the German tradition: Outdoor beer-drinking? Check. Sip the spiced, toasty Oktoberfest brew by iconic German brewer Beck’s, or enjoy Beck’s classic Pilsner, as well as the caramelly Oktoberfest offering from Goose Island brewery in Chicago.
Traditional Bavarian garb? Check — you’re sure to see lederhosen and dirndls in the crowd, though they might show a bit more skin here–because of the warmer climate of course. Oom-pah bands? Check. But because this is Miami, the tubas and yodeling eventually give way to pop and dance music, with local band La Linea, DJ Zog, and many others adding spice to all the spaetzle.
And like Munich’s famous festival, Marlins Park will have carnival rides. As in Germany’s Oktoberfest, you can get a bird’s-eye view of the scene from the top of a giant Ferris wheel. A zip line and dunk tank, however, are there to add a true Miami touch. But if you’re going to partake in either of those, remember that it’s probably a good idea to set your beer down before you go on the zip line, and if one of your friends volunteers you for the tank, you’ll be glad you’re not actually in Germany. Brrr.
But most importantly, Miami’s celebration is about enjoying great beer and the company of friends. The German-style brews will flow, but if you want to try something different, sample the citrusy Belgian White from Shock Top, or chill out with an easy-drinking 312 Pale Ale from Goose Island. Whatever you decide on, you’ll enjoy it all in a festive, Bavarian-style atmosphere, no passport required.
