Once the hot new things muscling aside pinball machines in the arcade, video games are now entering a kind of middle age. As with many middle-aged things, there’s a fair bit of nostalgia for the classics, and paying proper homage to the bleeps and blips of joysticking history is ARTcade, a brand-spanking-new South Beach hybrid of art, beer, and retro arcade games still operating on the retro price of a single quarter (which ain’t worth a dime these days). So grab a couple of fun-loving friends and play Donkey Kong while knocking back a round of brewskis. Before long, you’ll be transported back to your best friend’s basement circa 1985 when you were supposed to be studying math. Egad!
Choose from over 60 games, from Galaga and Space Invaders to Frogger and all the incarnations of Pac-Man (Ms., Junior, etc.). There’s even Dig Dug, Centipede, and Q-Bert. But not all the art here is pixelated. Housed in a former gallery, the place isn’t called ARTcade for nothing, with masterpieces by local artists to throw you off your game. Real game goobers may want to play the stand-alone versions, while social types may choose to belly up to the flat-top cocktail table version, featuring all sorts of games you can play head-to-head. To further distract you from your blips and bleeps, there may or may not be a DJ spinning retro tunes from time to time. Or, rather, from Burger Time. Video games not for the lactose intolerant, but oh so hard to resist.
