If Taco Tuesdays in your house too often involve a run for the border or a jar of Old El Paso, upgrade your game by bringing your brood to Huahua’s Taqueria. This is the mod Mexican cousin of South Beach hot spot HaVen Gastro-Lounge, and even the little ones will appreciate Chef Todd Erickson’s trippy, tasty twists on traditional Mexican fare. This place is just right for harried parents: it’s a fast, casual, no frills, line-up-and-place-your-order spot, with tables outside on the less trafficky side of Lincoln Road. There’s plenty to please the entire fam, be it the extremely addicting elote—whole fire-grilled corn cobs with spicy mayo, cotija cheese, and cilantro—or the fantastic fried chicken tacos with jalapeño cornbread and ancho ranch dressing. Having your kids at Huahua’s makes you seem like hip parents even if you’re really about as cutting edge as Mr. Rogers. It’s sharp here, but not too edgy for a tiny palate. Mac ‘n’ queso, anyone? Mix and match tacos—prices are well within the stratosphere—but save room and possibly call a cab for the paletas. These are traditional Mexican ice pops made with fruit and, in one case, tequila. The motley mix of grownups, kids, and club kids here makes for an eclectic scene where anything goes, so you won’t have to worry about anyone giving you looks when your kids decide to dive head-first into a vat of guac.
