Rather than head to your local run-of-the-mill multiplex, why not have your family day somewhere rich in cinema history? This isn’t just any old theatre — TCL Chinese Theatre has hosted countless Hollywood premieres (including Star Wars in 1977) and contains the autographs, handprints and footprints of over 200 of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Your kids may or may not care about the theater’s history, but they will certainly be enraptured by the colorful Chinese pagoda and prominent dragon design of its main plaza — hardly the carbon-copy Movieplex 18 they’re used to. While they’re exploring the theatre’s dragon-themed architecture, you and your spouse can survey the handprints and footprints of Hollywood’s biggest stars dating all the way back to the 1920s. See if you can find the handprints of the legendary Steve McQueen, the only star to ever put his handprints in upside down. Arrive about an hour before the first showing of the day so you can take family photos before the theater becomes too crowded with tourists.
