Everyone knows about the legendary lavish resorts of the Las Vegas Strip, where doors never lock, parties go all night, and entertainment options are seemingly endless. It’s an incredible experience that happens in only one city in the world. But not everyone who comes to Vegas wants all that constant energy. Some seek out the resorts off the Las Vegas Strip that are more akin to Old Vegas: sophisticated, elegant, and self-contained. Destinations in and of themselves. Here are some favorites.
Elegance for Everyone
If a sophisticated resort with plenty of things to do is your target, the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa and its sister property Green Valley Ranch are your best choices. Whether you’ve arrived as a couple or a family, it’s likely that you were attracted to the nearby Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. After a hike, climb, or maybe just a scenic drive, relax on the circular pool deck. Wade into the social center and mingle with your fellow guests, or find your own private plunge. Later, refuel at one of the new dining options like the Italian Salute, Thai 8 Noodle Bar, Mexican Mercadito, or comfort spot Hearthstone—then take in a movie, a few frames of bowling, or a rockin’ club set with local favorites Zowie Bowie. In the morning, visit the spa here, a near equal to the best on the Strip, or pop next door to Downtown Summerlin for some shopping.
Green Valley in suburban Henderson has a more classic Tuscan feeling, with dining that includes Hank’s Fine Steakhouse and award-winning Pizza Rock. You’ll find shopping and more restaurants in The District next door. And if the great spa and pool don’t offer enough of a physical challenge, the adjacent Life Time Athletic has indoor and outdoor tennis courts where you can definitely work up a sweat.
Want to rock and roll all night and party every day? Then either Palms Casino Resort or Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is your jam. At Palms, you might make plans to see big-name rock headliners in the Pearl Concert Theater, after dining in the splendor of celeb-magnet N9Ne Steakhouse, the view-tastic Alizé, or world-class Lao Sze Chuan.
At Hard Rock, you might be checking out any of three different concert venues, or even the notorious Rehab pool party on weekends, getting your fill of artful sushi at Nobu and the titular specialties at 35 Steaks + Martinis in between. People-watching is definitely prime time here, and both spots are a very short drive or cab ride from the Strip.
Just want to get away and golf? Consider the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa or Aliante Casino Hotel and Spa. Set amid sprawling acres, the JW Marriott is adjacent to a TPC course—with dozens more only a 20-minute drive away—and located right on the cusp between Vegas and suburban Summerlin. Within the JW Marriott’s Southwestern resort charm, you’ll be able to choose from dining experiences as diverse as an authentic Irish pub and the old-school service of the Carmel Room.
A bit farther flung on the northern edge of the valley, Aliante is truly a modern escape (adjacent to a Troon course), where you’ll find an intriguing dining program focused on using produce from local farms. You might rest here between links, or use it as a basecamp after visiting Mount Charleston.
