On the morning of my first surfing event with Priceless Hawaii, I was so excited. The weather in Waikiki was beautiful as always, and I couldn’t wait to meet the Mastercard customers who had signed up to hit the waves with me. Working with the Hans Hedemann Surf School, they’d enjoy a surfing lesson tailored to their skill level, and then we’d all spend some quality time riding the perfect waves together. When the instructors finally brought the group over to us after some preliminary training, it took no time at all for us to hit it off. The participants came from all over the country, but they all had one thing in common: they love surfing and know that Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to do it. After some more training on the beach—practicing paddling, popping up, and other basic skills—we picked up our boards and made our way into the turquoise blue water. The waves were just right, not too big but a good enough size that we could all catch long rides. I spent time with each group, giving tips and encouragement as they dropped in on their first waves of the day. While there were plenty of wipeouts, I was happy to see that everybody managed to stand up and have some super-fun rides. I even jumped onto one of the girl’s boards with her and we caught a few waves together riding tandem like we were in a ‘60s surfing movie. It was such a great time and we had plenty of laughs as we caught wave after wave and high-fived in the water, which is what surfing is all about. After we all caught our last rides of the day, we walked up the beach to a fantastic little restaurant and had lunch together while chatting about how much fun we all had out in the water—everybody had a story to tell. It was an epic day and I can’t wait to meet up with the new Priceless Hawaii participants in November. If you get a chance to come, you really should. It’s a truly unforgettable experience.
