Give Me Some Sugar: A Baking Class Where You Do More Than Roll Dough

Getting the girls together and taking a baking course might be the last thing on your mind. After all, aren’t there so many better ways to spend your Saturday mornings? Think again. If you’ve been looking for a great group activity that actually allows you to chat with your friends, a baking class might be perfect. It’s not like you can talk during yoga.

A baking class at Give Me Some Sugar allows you to not only gab as much as you want, but also bond like never before with your friends. The Lakeview-based venue is part baking school, part retail shop, so after class you can scoop up some cool utensils and aprons to give as gifts or keep for yourself. Sessions range from 90 minutes to two hours, and in that time you get to dig into the flour with your fingers, whip cake batter to perfection, and watch your efforts transform into tantalizing treats.

Classes vary from cupcake- and doughnut-making sessions to cake-decorating courses, and they’re kept quite intimate so that you don’t get lost in the shuffle. They’re also interactive and educational so that participants get to learn every aspect of the baking process for making cakes, doughnuts, fruit pies, and more.

The doughnut class is especially fun, as the old-school favorite gets a makeover with a few fresh approaches. During class you’ll create masterpieces like maple-glazed bacon, buttermilk cake, and s’mores doughnuts, as well as doughnut holes and sour-cream blueberry drops. The end result will be dozens and dozens of delicious treats—so many, in fact, that there will be plenty to take home.

Equally popular are the cookie and cake decorating classes, which give you the chance to decorate pastries however you want. The classes for grown-ups (there are children’s classes as well) are typically filled with people celebrating a milestone birthday or upcoming nuptials, but you don’t need to have a special occasion to indulge in one of Give Me Some Sugar’s cool classes. And, they are BYOB, so bring along a few bottles of bubbly to make mimosas or Bellinis for the gang. That should make class even more interesting. Plus, on how many occasions have you had an instructor who encourages such shenanigans?

If this baking class whets your appetite for more culinary skills, consider expanding your horizons to include an Italian cooking class.
