Mexican food. American whiskey. Californian inspiration. Add it all together, plop it in the middle of Chicago, and you get Big Star. This place is casual in the fanciest way possible, so if you and your friends are looking for a dinner spot with a laid back atmosphere, no-frills décor (save the giant illuminated sign that reads simply “Tacos”), and an amazing menu, look no further than this Wicker Park classic. As for those tacos, they’re pretty darn special. Instead of those grungy mystery meat tacos from you-know-where, Big Star’s tacos are made with beef, chicken, pork, fish, and vegetables that are sustainable, organic, and all those other great words we like to see attached to our food. The one thing they’re not is expensive, so take a seat in the huge dining room and order up a few of each variety, along with some chips and guac and a round of cold draft beers to put out the fire in your mouth after a bit too much hot sauce. If this is a celebration, cap off the feast with a round of smooth Four Roses bourbon on the rocks–or whatever the whiskey of the day may be. It’s a fittingly mellow end to a major meal.
