Throughout October, some of Chicago’s best restaurants are making the act of charity both delicious and easy with food and drink specials in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Drop by one or more of them with your friend or loved one. Your little indulgences will taste that much better knowing you’re supporting such a worthy cause.
At Glazed & Infused, the temptations are sweeter than ever as the artisanal doughnut shop donates five percent of proceeds from sales of the specialty “Chocolate4 Lynn Sage” treat in October. It’s quite the decadent dessert: a quadruple chocolate cake doughnut (since triple chocolate isn’t enough) with a chocolate ganache glaze topped with pink and dark chocolate curls in honor of the charity. Better buy two.
Or you can drink pink this month at Lush Wine and Spirits. Both locations feature a “From Our Rack To Yours” special where a portion of proceeds from each bottle of pink wine purchased will benefit the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation. There is a great selection of pink-hued vino from all over the world in every price range and flavor profile. Call it blush, call it rosé, just don’t call it nasty, because these fine pink wines are head-and-shoulders above the plonk you might remember from your parents’ dinner parties, with crisp, fruity flavors but none of that syrupy mouthfeel.
PF Chang’s is a major contributor to breast cancer research, and this year the company is donating up to $100,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. As part of its efforts, 250 locations across the country are encouraging guests to take a selfie with the “pink warrior horse” out front (they painted their iconic statues for the occasion) and post the photo on social media with the #PaintPFChangsPink hashtag. They’re donating $1 for every selfie posted. They’re also donating $1 for every spicy tuna or California roll sold during the month, which makes giving to charity about as easy as falling off a pink horse.
You can never go wrong with The Pump Room–which celebrates its 76th anniversary in October. In addition to spotlighting signature dishes and drinks that were on the original menu, the legendary restaurant will also raise funds for breast cancer research. Guests will get to order special three-course, prix-fixe menus for lunch and dinner that benefit Bright Pink, a Chicago-based non-profit focused on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. Also, the adjacent Library bar will offer a specialty cocktail, the Belvedere Raspberry Gimlet, and a portion of those proceeds will also benefit the charity. Cheers to that.
And Sophie’s at Saks Fifth Avenue toasts to a cure by offering the “Think Pink Cocktail.” It’s a delicious mixture of Barlett pear liqueur, gin, pomegranate, burlesque bitters, hibiscus syrup and sparkling rosé. One dollar of each cocktail will be donated to Bright Pink. Just think of the shopping you’ll be able to accomplish with that kind of inspiration.
