Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo: A Great Family Adventure

SHARE

For mesmerizing ocean experience, take the whole family to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. With 33,000 creatures from the deep blue sea swimming in 10 million liters of water, it’s one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world, making it the perfect destination for a family outing you’ll never forget.

Put on a brave face and square off against 400 toothy sharks and shimmering stingrays, all from behind the safety of a thick acrylic window. Feeling especially bold? Walk through the 270-degree crystal-clear undersea tunnel for an up-close experience as piranha, giant catfish, and other oceanic predators swim alongside you and over your head.

You might be in the desert, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a quick side trip to a rain forest, where you’ll cross a suspension bridge high above a river to reach the rock pool. Once there, watch your children squeal in glee as they reach out to touch the playful otters and penguins. There’s no chance of your kids getting bored, as there are a total of 38 aquatic displays full of rare residents, such as air-breathing African lungfish, archerfish, giant spider crabs, and sea dragons. They’ll squeal with delight as a crab snatches a morsel of food out of the water with his long claws, or an archerfish sends a stream of water into an overhead branch to knock down a tasty insect.

Families with a truly insatiable thirst for adventure can enjoy an experience that’s quite literally immersive: Simply hop out of the tunnel and into a diving suit to take the plunge with the largest collection of sand tiger sharks in the world. Don’t worry, these sharks are on a strict feeding schedule, so they won’t think you’re a midday snack. But if your heart isn’t quite ready to watch your kids swimming alongside sharks and stingrays, grab some snorkeling gear and take a trip in the shark cage to get a close — but not too close — experience of the underwater zoo.

Cap off the day by taking your children to the Ocean School, where they’ll learn about adaptation and survival in different aquatic environments. After a day of playing and learning at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, don’t be surprised if your kids become the next generation of great underwater explorers.
