Bistro-style Gourmet Food in Stockholm: The Rise of Bakfickor

SHARE

Bakfickor, or “hip pockets” as they are sometimes known, are the sister bistros to many luxury, Michelin-starred restaurants in Stockholm. Bakfickor are fantastic if you want to eat high-quality, gourmet food in Stockholm without spending your whole paycheck, while surviving on instant noodles for the rest of the month! Stockholm has a reputation for being an expensive city, but the number of affordable bakfickor run by well-known restaurateurs is on the rise. The concept behind these restaurants is to offer gourmet food at affordable prices—food in Stockholm that is of high quality and available to everyone, with no reservations required.

These are some of Stockholm’s best hip pockets, run by renowned chefs:

Gastrologik has one Michelin star and is a modern restaurant focusing on “new Nordic” food. They use local Swedish and Scandinavian ingredients which are natural, organic, and seasonal. Its hip pocket, Speceriet, offers great value bistro-style gourmet food of a similar quality.

Mattias Dahlgren Matsalen, considered to be one of Stockholm’s foremost luxury restaurants with its two Michelin stars, is based in the Grand Hotel together with hip pocket, Matbaren, which offers medium-size meals at reasonable prices.

Esperanto fuses fresh, Swedish food with various international styles and kitchens. Japanese cuisine is a key influence in terms of tastes, cooking methods, and its menu’s aesthetic. Its hip pocket, Råkultur, serves cold, mostly raw food, with only occasional frying or roasting. The Flying Elk is a gastropub and the hip pocket of the popular chef Björn Frantzén’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Frantzén.

A further example of gourmet food is Oaxen Slip, on Djurgården, as is luxury restaurant Oaxen Krog’s hip pocket. Pocket is Pontus Frithiof’s associated bistro, and both Pubologi and Djuret are affordable sister restaurants to the exclusive Leijontornet 12 x 8, which is only open 12 times a year, with only eight seats each time.
