Vegetables get top billing at Grain Store, a new farm-to-table restaurant that focuses on the finest crops from any given season. While the menu at this Kings Cross hot spot does feature meat and fish in many dishes, it’s the greens (and blues, yellows, purples, and reds) that take center stage, making for a great conversation-starter on your next date night. Grab a romantic table for two in the palatial dining room, brightened with shiny stainless steel bar stools, white tile, and plenty of blonde wood. The fresh produce makes its first appearance not on your plate but in your glass, thanks to a selection of savoury cocktails that include the green tomato margarita, made with green tomato-infused tequila; and cedar wood lemonade, which gets its unique flavor from cedar wood Fino sherry.
It might take the better part of those cocktails to decide what to order, thanks to a French-influenced menu from Chef Bruno Loubot that finds the sweet spot between haute cuisine and Provençal simplicity. Savvy gourmands will have a field day choosing between dishes made with esoteric items like lovage pesto and dukkah (an Egyptian mix of herbs and nuts). Tonight, however, you and your date deserve to be spoiled with a custom-made menu straight from the chef himself. Your faith in the kitchen will be richly rewarded with a parade of colorful, inventive, and–most importantly–delicious dishes ranging from butternut squash ravioli with mustard apricots to steamed seaweed sushi with braised pak choi and hake in vanilla butter. However your meal begins, you’ll want to end it on a sweet note, so order the rhubarb rice pudding brûlée and two forks, because a farm-fresh treat like this is simply too good not to share with someone you love.
