With an interior packed with more dark wood than Sherwood Forest, The Windsor Castle Kensington is a real publican paradise, and that’s before we even get to the beers. Walk in on your next night out with friends and you’ll be confronted with an impressive row of taps bearing the names of real English ales – Itchen Valley and Triple FFF Brewery, among others – the perfect accompaniment to an evening catching up on the latest news from your friends. Shack up in one of the rigid wooden booths lining the walls and soak in the atmosphere. This gorgeous pub has been around since the 1830’s, so they know a thing or two about hospitality. On the menu, you’ll find the usual offerings of sausage and mash and fish and chips, along with fancier dishes like smoked ocean trout served with violet potatoes for your friends with more discriminating culinary tastes. If the weather’s nice–or even if there’s a light rain–it’s worth heading outside to the garden, an ivy-covered darling of a space that invites even more energetic carousing, perhaps with a round of classic Pimm’s cup cocktails. Lined with humble tin pots of peonies, Windsor Castle may not be the flashiest nightclub in town, but it certainly is a lovely throwback to a time when the local publick house was an essential part of any community.
