Go Ape Adventure Park: Such Great Heights

Every family has its responsibilities. Mom and dad have their stressful jobs. The kids have school and all kinds of outside activities. And everybody has to pitch in with the housework, dog-walking, and countless other chores required just to keep things running smoothly. Sometimes, it’s enough to make you want to leave it all behind for a while and just run wild. When this happens to your family, don’t let the pressure get the best of you. Instead, get your family together and pay a visit to Go Ape for a day of fun and thrills in the great outdoors. You’ll come back recharged and ready to handle anything life has to throw at you.

The UK’s premier outdoor adventures park, Go Ape is just 30 minutes from the center of London–a short walk from the Cockfosters tube station–and it offers a Tarzan-like experience that will bring out the spirit of adventure in the whole family–as long as your kids are 10 or older and at least 4 feet 7 inches tall. If you’ve daydreamed it at your desk, you’ll find it here. Treetop swings, climbing ropes, ziplines, swaying bridges, and other fun challenges are nestled among acres of verdant forest that were once the hunting grounds of King Henry IV. Each two to three hour quest takes you through more than six football fields’ worth of breathtaking scenery, reaching heights of more than 100 feet.

Go Ape’s Tree Top Adventure involves little hassle and no special skills. The instructor will outfit you with a sturdy safety harness, then give your tribe the lowdown on the rules. When you’re let loose on the hushed forest, distant howls, shrieks, and laughter from other adventurers will pierce the silence. You’ll soon be adding to those joyous cries as you climb, swing, slide, balance and inch your way through the exhilarating challenges. You’ll find yourself racing ahead with your kids, eager for the next thrill.

There are 28 locations throughout the UK, each with their own unique features. At the London park, there are two standouts — the tricky balancing act of the skateboard zip, and the exhilaration of the almost 400-foot-long final zip wire. Approaching the skateboard zip, don’t be daunted by the fact that your kids traversed the entire length with ease. Resist the urge to look down, and prepare for the ride of your life. The final zip is the perfect opportunity to show everyone your inner Tarzan or Jane, and your primal yell will turn to laughter as you reach the other side.

As you navigate the course, your day-to-day problems suddenly seem small. With the lush and leafy crowns surrounding you, and adrenaline rushing through your body, you’ll almost come to think of the trees as home. But you know you can’t stay forever, so put aside thoughts of appointments and homework for now and concentrate on reaching new heights.
