Emma’s Country Kitchen is open during the week for breakfast and lunch, but you’ll want to take your family here on a Saturday or Sunday for its homey, unpretentious, and absolutely delicious brunch. It’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend adventure together, since everybody can indulge in their decadent morning favorites before burning off the calories with some family fun. Everything on the brunch menu’s amazing, but Emma’s is locally famous for its buttermilk biscuits, which make excellent companions to the thyme-seasoned red potatoes. Order them separately, or enjoy them as part of the kitchen’s beloved Emma’s Benny, which adds house-cured peameal (cornmeal) bacon, poached eggs, and mousselline sauce–an especially rich cousin of hollandaise. Take advantage of the bottomless coffee while your kids slather their blueberry pancakes in citrus butter and guzzle fresh-squeezed OJ. (The menu also offers the cheeky I-know-what-you-did-last-night burger, if you enjoyed a parents-only date night ahead of this family meal.) On your way out the door, snag a dozen housemade donuts or some New Orleans-style beignets to take with you on your outing. You never know when you might need another jolt of delicious energy.
